Ohio counties offering prescription drug discount card
Montgomery County has joined seven other Ohio counties--and about 900 counties nationwide--who offer their citizens a prescription drug discount card. (Source: "Montgomery County rolls out its drug card," Dayton Daily News, Dec. 1, 2007.) A partnership program between the National Association of Counties and Caremark Inc., a benefits management company, the card saves consumers 20% off the retail price of drugs at participating pharmacies. The card is free to any county citizen regardless of income and there are no enrollment forms. Montgomery County commissioners say they "received 800 e-mail requests for cards in 24 hours after a Dayton Daily News story about the program was published" last week and they hope the program will help "defray prescription drug costs for the estimated 40,000 uninsured county residents, as well as those who are under-insured or need medications not covered by their insurance plans."
Commissioner Judy Dodge said "This is a win-win for all. There's no cost to consumers or Montgomery County." The program costs are covered by Caremark, which receives a fee for administering the program from the 59,000 participating pharmacies across the country.
