Study: SCOTUS ruling could lead to massive ACA premium spike

Oral arguments begin next week in the latest Supreme Court case on the ACA, and new analysis has found that the outcome could impact a significant number of Ohioans (“Study: ObamaCare premiums could triple if court tosses subsidies,” The Hill, Feb. 26, 2015).

At issue is whether the ACA allows for federal subsidies in the federally facilitated marketplace that is operating in 37 states, including Ohio.

According to a new study from consulting firm Avalere Health, if the Supreme Court throws out subsidies on the federal exchange, premiums could increase by as much as 779 percent. The report estimates that the average marketplace premium will increase 165 percent, affecting 197,000 Ohioans.
