Analysis finds Anthem, CareSoure sell most insurance plans in Ohio

New analysis from the Ohio Hospital Association has found that Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shiled was the largest insurer in Ohio last year, with $5.1 billion in revenue, followed closely by Medicaid managed care plan CareSource, which generaged $4.2 billion in premium revenue (Source: “Anthem, CareSource by far sell the most insurance in Ohio, analysis finds,” Business First (Columbus), Aug. 15, 2014).

“During 2013, Ohio’s Health Insuring Corporations (HICs) saw an increase in both the number of lives covered and profitability,” the annual OHA report stated. “Revenue from premiums grew 2  percent over the previous year, and enrollment increased by a similar percentage.  The median total margin for Ohio’s HICs was 4.2 percent.”

The report also noted that the push into the individual market under Obamacare – CareSource for example is selling directly to consumers for the first time this year – will be reflected in the 2014 financial reports.
