Ohioans’ monthly ACA premiums average $121 after subsidies

Ohioans who recently bought health coverage through the federally run insurance exchange are paying $121 in monthly premiums, on average, according to a federal report released this week (Source: “Monthly Obamacare premium averages $121 in Ohio,” Columbus Dispatch, June 19, 2014).

According to the Department of Health and Human Services report, that $121 monthly sum reflects an average subsidy of $250, meaning that at least 130,000 Ohioans are receiving federal tax credits that together are worth at least $32 million per month.

Among the 36 states that opted for a federally operated exchange, Ohio’s consumers had the fourth-highest average out-of-pocket premium costs, behind New Jersey ($148 per month), North Dakota ($132) and Delaware ($130). After subsidies, the average out-of-pocket cost for 5.4 million people who selected an exchange plan in those 36 states was $82 a month. The lowest cost per person: $23 per month in Mississippi.
