Ohio Department of Health officials announced this week that H1N1 vaccinations in Ohio prevented 64 deaths and more than 300,000 cases of influenza during the 2009 pandemic (Source: “Study: H1N1 vaccine saved many lives,” Associated Press via Lancaster Eagle-Gazette, April 21, 2011).
The ODH study also estimated that vaccinations prevented 1,400 hospitalizations and saved $8.4 million in hospital costs in the year between April 2009 and April 2010. The state shipped 4.1 million doses of vaccine to more than 3,000 providers during that time.
