Report: ACA provisions place ‘unsustainable burden’ on Ohio Medicaid

A new report from the Buckeye Institute for Public Policy Solutions calls for reforms to Medicaid in order to change its “unsustainable spending trajectory,” according to a press release from the organization.

According to the report (pdf, 21 pages), which was written by Brian Blase of the Washington D.C.-based Heritage Foundation, Ohio should consider four policy options to curb the cost of Medicaid:

  • Petition the federal government to remove the maintenance of effort requirements that prevent states from reducing Medicaid eligibility requirements
  • Increase state efforts to recover assets from the estates of Medicaid beneficiaries in long-term care facilities
  • Petition the federal government for increased state flexibility in exchange for reduced federal reimbursement rates
  • “Introduce free-market reforms to better align the incentives of patients, providers, and taxpayers”
