The medical home concept of having a primary-care physician oversee and coordinate patient care is gaining popularity (Source: “Old-fashioned docs inspire new 'medical homes'," USA Today, July 14, 2008).
Among those exploring the concept are 27 of 39 Blue Cross Blue Shield insurers nationwide, which have begun testing medical home models. Corporations such as IBM, Dow Chemical and General Motors have joined doctors, insurers and the AARP to also promote the concept.
In Ohio, Access Health Columbus is considering ways to create a coordinated medical home network in Franklin County.
