Data Points

Data findings: 2023 Health Value Dashboard

  • Ohio ranks 44 on health value out of 50 states and D.C. This means that Ohioans are living less healthy lives and spending more on health care than people in most other states.
  • Ohio ranks 43 on population health and 40 on healthcare spending.
  • Ohio and West Virginia are the only two states that rank in the bottom quartile for both population health and healthcare spending.
  • Compared to 2021, Ohio improved on 24% of metrics, worsened on 22% and had no significant change on 55%.
  • COVID-19 deaths were a major factor in Ohioans losing 1.5 years of life expectancy, on average, from 2018 to 2020.
  • Premature death increased 13% overall in Ohio from 2018 to 2020.
  • Preliminary data indicate that 2021 saw Ohio’s highest number of drug overdose deaths ever, with rates highest among Black Ohioans in 2021.
  • If disparities were eliminated:
    • 238,122 fewer Black Ohioans would experience physical or emotional symptoms due to experiences of racism
    • 23,892 fewer Hispanic adults would be uninsured
    • 632,011 fewer people with a disability would be out of the labor force
    • 50,354 fewer Ohioans with low incomes would experience two or more ACEs
  • Lesbian, gay and bisexual Ohioans are 4.8 times more likely to consider suicide
  • The odds of having depression are three times higher among those who experience discrimination, and nearly one in six LQBTQ+ adults experienced discrimination in 2020 alone.
  • Tobacco use is one of the key factors contributing to Ohio’s poor performance on health value. Ohio’s persistently poor rank on the adult smoking metric (44th in this edition) helps to explain why the state struggles to improve health and control spending relative to other states.
