U.S. gun deaths ticked down in 2023, CDC data shows

Gun murders in 2023 fell 14% from the 2021 peak, while gun suicides peaked in 2023, according to the latest available statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Source: “CDC: U.S. gun deaths fell in 2023, but remained among highest on record,” Cleveland Plain Dealer, April 3).
 
The CDC reported more than 46,000 gun-related deaths in 2023, with suicides accounting for 58% and murders at 38%, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of data from the CDC, the FBI and other sources.
 
More than 46,000 people died of gun-related injuries in the United States in 2023. While the number of gun deaths in the U.S. fell for the second consecutive year in 2023, the total remained among the highest annual totals on record. The rate of gun fatalities varies widely from state to state.
 
Ohio, Pennsylvania and Michigan were among the lowest rates of gun deaths, between 10.1 and 15 gun deaths per 100,000 people, when compared to other U.S. states.
 
Indiana, Kentucky and West Virginia each had rates of between 15.1 and 20 gun deaths per 100,000 people.
