Social distancing rules pose challenge for addiction recovery programs

Many Ohioans in addiction recovery are facing potential isolation because of new restrictions surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic (Source: “Addicts in recovery face new obstacles with coronavirus limiting crucial interaction,” Akron Beacon Journal, March 25, 2020).

“One of the worst things for somebody who is in recovery from addiction is social isolation,” said Jerry Craig, executive director of the Summit County ADM (Alcohol, Drug Addiction & Mental Health Services) Board. “And so being able to connect with one another in this environment where we’re trying to have this social distance is really challenging.”

Craig said providers have been adapting to meet social distancing guidelines, and services that would normally be conducted face-to-face are being transitioned to telehealth where appropriate.
