HPIO forum to explore how Ohio leaders can create more self-sufficient employment

The Health Policy Institute of Ohio is hosting a forum titled “What Works to Increase Self-Sufficient Employment,” from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday Dec. 13 at Ohio University in Dublin.

Whether it's a ladder up out of poverty or an off-ramp from government assistance, one of the greatest challenges facing state leaders in the new year will be developing ways for more Ohioans to find jobs that include wages and benefits that lead to self-sufficiency.

There is clear evidence that employment is an important determinant of health and that jobs that pay sufficient wages and offer benefits contribute to better health. What can the public and private sector do to help Ohioans transition away from public programs and into self-sufficient employment that supports better health?

This forum will explore state policy strategies that can strengthen supports for Ohio learners and jobseekers, thereby increasing the likelihood that Ohioans with low incomes will find better employment opportunities and eventually become self-sufficient. The event also will include an update on the status of Ohio's Medicaid work requirement waiver request that is currently under review.
