HPIO President: Health affordability challenges remain after ACA

In an opinion article published last week by the Cleveland Plain Dealer, HPIO President Amy Rohling McGee wrote that while the ACA has improved the affordability of health insurance coverage for many, especially for those with lower incomes, challenges remain in ensuring affordability for all Ohioans (Source: “Health care affordability for some Ohioans has improved, but challenges remain: Amy Rohling McGee,” Cleveland Plain Dealer, May 25, 2014).

McGee pointed out that nationally, 85 percent of people who selected an insurance plan through the new federal marketplace received financial assistance. “Even with this assistance, however, challenges remain,” McGee wrote. "Many Ohioans who gained coverage through the new federal marketplace still will have to pay substantial amounts out of pocket, even with financial assistance."
