Ohio Department of Health Director Wymyslo steps down

The Kasich administration announced earlier this week that Dr. Ted Wymyslo will step down as the Director of the Ohio Department of Health at the end of the month to return to his private medical practice (Source: “Department of Health director leaving Kasich administration,” Columbus Dispatch, Feb. 4, 2014).

Since his appointment to the position in 2011, Wymyslo devoted much of his time to promoting the patient-centered medical home model. Under the model, primary-care doctors oversee their patients’ care, coordinating with specialists, pharmacists and other health providers. Doctors are paid for keeping their patients well instead of based on how many patients they see, which supporters believe will lower costs and improve care.

Wymyslo, a Dayton-area primary-care doctor, used the system in his own practice.

Administration officials have indicated that a new Health Director will be named by the end of the month.
