Ohio AG warns consumers against ACA-related scams

Last week Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine warned Ohio consumers to be wary of scams related to the Affordable Care Act (Source: “Ohioans should be wary of Obamacare scams, officials say,” Cleveland Plain Dealer, Oct. 4, 2013).

“Scammers often pretend to be associated with the government to make their ploys seem real,” Attorney General Mike DeWine said in a statement. “We want to warn Ohio families to be on guard for potential scams and to take steps to protect themselves.”

The attorney general’s office has already received complaints about phone calls demanding personal information that is supposedly needed to issue a new Medicare or “Obamacare” card, spokeswoman Kate Hanson said.

Ohioans who suspect a scam or an unfair business practice can contact either the attorney general’s office at (800) 282-0515 or through its website. The Department of Insurance also has a new ACA fraud hotline at (877) 727-6427.
