Coverage still allusive for many Ohioans with pre-existing conditions

Several months after the state established a high-risk insurance pool for those with pre-existing conditions, many still have not enrolled because of the cost or because they do not meet the qualifications of the program (Source: “Pre-existing conditions still hinder insurance coverage,” Springfield News Sun, Dec. 11, 2010).

According to the Ohio Department of Insurance, at least 777 Ohioans have enrolled in the high-risk pool, which officials say is on target with their enrollment projects to this point. ODI expects the program to eventually enroll 5,000 Ohioans. The pool, which is in administered by the nonprofit Medical Mutual of Ohio, is open to Ohioans with pre-existing conditions who have been without insurance for six months.

The state is optimistic that a $1.1 million federal grant for a toll-free help line will enable more uninsured Ohioans with pre-existing conditions to enroll in the high-risk pool (Source: “Help line being developed
for uninsured Ohioans,” Springfield News Sun, Dec. 11, 2010). The help line, which is still being developed, will assist those who qualify for the pool to find financial assistance. Until the number is operational, residents can call ODI directly at 877-730-1117 for assistance.
