Ohio high-risk pool to launch Sunday

Enrollment begins Sunday for Ohio’s high-risk insurance pool, which is expected to cover about 5,500 enrollees who could not previously get health insurance because of a pre-existing condition (Source: “High-risk uninsured to get help,” Akron Beacon Journal, July 30, 2010).

The federal government is providing $152 million to the state for the plan, which will be administered by Medical Mutual of Ohio, the state’s largest insurer. The high-risk pool is a temporary measure that will be in effect until 2014, when state insurance exchanges are implemented as part of national health reform.

Monthly premiums will range from $92 to $777, depending on age, coverage selected, where people live and whether they smoke.
