Pfizer to pay Ohio $32 million as part of multi-state settlement

As part of a $2.3 billion multi-state and federal settlement, Pfizer Inc. is set to pay Ohio $32 million (Source: “Ohio netting $32M in historic Pfizer settlement,” Business First of Columbus, Sept. 2, 2009).

The settlement is the result of charges that  Pfizer illegally marketed drugs for uses that were not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray said a Pfizer subsidiary will pay $1.3 billion in criminal penalties and $1 billion to settle civil damages and penalties to states and the federal government to compensate Medicaid, Medicare and other programs. Cordray also said that is was the nation’s largest-ever health-care fraud settlement.
