Insurers playing active role in health reform debate

Shedding its image as a roadblock to changing the health care system, the health-insurance industry has become an active participate in the national dialogue on reform (Source: “Insurers alter tune on health reform,” Columbus Dispatch/AP, March 16, 2009).

"We understand we need to come to the table with very specific solutions," Said Karen Ignagni, president of America's Health Insurance Plans, the industry's Washington-based trade association.

"I have seen very few groups, including the insurance industry, that are willing to exercise the nuclear
option and torpedo reform," said Ron Pollack, executive director of Families USA, a liberal advocacy group. "They have participated in a good-faith manner."
