State Senator proposes ban on junk food in schools

State Sen. Eric Kearney, D-North Avondale, introduced a bill Tuesday that would ban junk food from vending machines in Ohio public schools (Source: “Bill: Ban junk food in Ohio schools,” Cincinnati Enquirer, Feb. 4, 2009).

The Cincinnati-area legislator’s bill would set nutritional standards for food and beverages sold in schools, limiting the amount of sugar, fat and calories. The National Conference on State Legislature has reported that six stated passed school junk food bans last year and another 17 states debated similar bills.

"We can't continue to fill our schools with junk food and soda and expect our children to remain healthy," Kearney said in a press statement.
