Ohio hospital patients overlooking financial aid programs

Despite the efforts of hospitals to promote programs that help the needy pay their medical bills, many patients still seem unaware that assistance is available (Source: “Some patients miss out on financial aid,” Columbus Dispatch, Dec. 1, 2008).

Given recent declines in elective surgeries that are affecting the bottom line at hospitals throughout the state, a greater emphasis is being placed on addressing unpaid bills.  Advocates say hospitals should do a better job of screening patients before they leave the hospital to determine if they are eligible for financial aid.
