Akron hospital leaders say new Summit County hospital would threaten nonprofit care

The 15 department chairs at Akron General Medical Center have started a campaign against a proposed physician-owned hospital to be build in northern Summit County, saying the new facility poses to great of a threat to nonprofit medical care in the area (Source: “AGMC cries foul on rival hospital,” Akron Beacon-Journal, Aug. 27, 2008).

''We need to have paying patients to continue serving all who walk through the doors and offset some of the losses that we incur from those who are uninsured and indigent,'' said Akron General President and Chief Executive Alan Bleyer.

The new hospital has attracted investment from 85 physicians, with planners expecting a total of 120 doctors to buy into the new facility by the time it opens.
