Health disparity takes center stage at NAACP convention in Cincinnati

One of the primary topics of discussion at the NAACP’s 99th Convention, being held this week in Cincinnati, is health disparities affecting the African-American community (Source: “Raising awareness of black health issues,” Cincinnati Enquirer, July 13, 2008).

Nelson L. Adams III, president of the National Medical Association, said health professionals need more education to make sure minorities and women get more aggressive care for serious illnesses. He also said more effort needs to be made to educate minorities about the need to take responsibility for their own well-being.

"It's not just us that's in bad shape," he said. "The whole country's in bad shape. But we're the worst of the worst. We're the sickest of the sick."
