Study finds higher death rate for Latino workers

A new government study has found that Latino workers die on the job at higher rates than other laborers. (Source: “Latino workers dying on job at higher rate, study finds,” Columbus Dispatch, June 5, 2008).

According to the study, Latinos tend to hold more high-risk jobs than those in other racial groups, but language and literacy barriers and poor training and supervision also might be factors. Falls and highway-related accidents have been the leading causes of these deaths in recent years.

Researchers in Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, and at the Center for Disease Control conducted this study.  Its results are published in CDC's  recent Morbiditiy and Mortality Weekly report.
