Anthem launches provider comparisons of diagnostic imaging technologies

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield has begun offering doctors an online comparison of hospital and outpatient providers of MRIs, CAT scans, PET scans and other advanced diagnostic imaging technology. (Source: "Anthem helps doctors compare test costs," Dayton Daily News, Nov. 15, 2007.) Developed by American Imaging Management, the OptiNetSM system focuses on cost and quality issues, including staff certifications, equipment quality and patient accessibility. "Advanced imaging has become one of health care's fastest-growing areas in both cost and volume, yet few patients are aware that some of the tests deliver high levels of radiation." According to Tony Firmstone, vice president of Anthem health services in Ohio, "This is part of Anthem's overall movement to become even more transparent by sharing information with providers related to cost and quality."
