What’s on the horizon: How policy can improve health, well-being and economic vitality in the Mahoning Valley

When Ohioans live in communities that support their economic well-being, their families thrive. However, many families are struggling to pay their rent, put food on their tables, cover their healthcare expenses and save for the future. And Ohioans live less healthy lives and spend more on health care than people in most other states.

Still, Ohioans, including residents of the Mahoning Valley, are resilient, and Ohio leaders can create environments and opportunities that allow everyone to thrive.

This interactive lunch and learn will explore these connections and discuss what’s on the policy horizon in Ohio and the Mahoning Valley.

Speakers will also discuss:

  • How financial insecurity negatively impacts health and well-being
  • Strategies public and private partners can support to promote financial prosperity among Ohio families
  • Factors that contribute to health disparities in Ohio
  • Local initiatives advancing health and economic well-being

Local leaders will provide examples of initiatives, programs and policies designed to advance equity in the region, share how they are collaborating with other partners and highlight success stories in the Mahoning Valley.

Speakers:

Panelists:

  • Sarah Lowry, Senior Director of Community Impact, Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley (moderator)
  • Erin Bishop, Health Commissioner, Youngstown City Health District
  • Carol Holmes-Chambers, Community Solutions Director, Youngstown Area Goodwill Industries
  • Justin Mondok, Director of Planning and Development, Eastgate Regional Council of Governments
