Humana CEO Offers Health Insurance Advice for Small Businesses

Mike McCallister, chief executive officer of health insurer Humana, told the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber that "Insurance will not work when it reaches beyond a point where people feel like they have protection." He also said small-business owners seeking to control health-care costs should "institute higher deductibles but lower premiums. Encourage employees to budget health-care costs and invest into a tax-advantaged health savings account. Lend employees money for emergencies. Use the Internet to enroll employees and give information. Cost-shifting to employees is not a long-term strategy." ("Humana CEO offers his vision" The Cincinnati Enquirer, Aug. 22, 2007)
