The Health Policy Institute of Ohio is pleased to announce the 2007 Health Policy Institute of Ohio Awards for Health Policy Research for faculty, students, and non-academic practitioners. The awards will honor outstanding research that is relevant to health policy in Ohio carried out by Ohio-based researchers. Nominations are encouraged from a broad health policy perspective, including issues such as health care access, health care administration, health care financing, community health, health education, public health, health promotion, environmental health, behavioral health, mental health, applied epidemiology, and allied health. The awards scoring process will prioritize health topics that emphasize community and population-based policy recommendations.

Health Policy Institute of Ohio Awards for Health Policy Research:

The 2007 awards, which include monetary recognition to the awardees, and in some cases to the awardee's academic department, will include:

1)      Ohio Health Policy Researcher of the Year – 2007;

2)      Ohio Health Policy Research Award – 2007;

3)      Best Ohio Health Policy Student Research Award – 2007;

4)      Best Health Policy Research Award for an Independent Scholar or Practitioner – 2007.

Eligibility:

  • Principal investigators (or their academic or practice organizations) must be Ohio-based. 
  • The work must have relevance to health policy in or for Ohio
  • The work shall have been published, submitted for publication, or officially presented to a policy-making body since January 1, 2006.
  • For the independent scholar or practitioner and student submissions, a poster session which has been presented at a reviewed academic or professional conference can be submitted.
  • Employees of the Health Policy Institute of Ohio and The Health Foundation of Greater Cincinnati, as well as members of the Review Committee, are not eligible for the awards. 

Submissions:

A complete submission (incomplete submissions will not be considered) will include:

  • A completed Cover Sheet Form
  • A complete, unbound copy of the work under consideration
  • A brief description (limit: one page) of the usefulness and importance of the research for Ohio health policy must accompany each submission
  • Student submissions must be accompanied by a recommendation (limit: one page) from a sponsoring faculty member
  • The deadline for submission is October 26, 2007.

All nominated works will become the property of the Health Policy Institute of Ohio and will not be returned to the submitter. While copyrights will remain the property of the researchers and their relevant organizations, submitters shall grant the Health Policy Institute of Ohio permission to reproduce the submissions for its review process, unless specifically prohibited.

Awards Decisions:

Decisions concerning awards will be at the complete discretion of the Health Policy Institute of Ohio, which will use a Health Policy Research Awards Review Committee. The Review Committee includes academics, practitioners, and an at-large representative. Evaluative comments and remarks concerning the submitted work will remain confidential and will not be shared beyond the Review Committee.

Awards Announcements:

Awards decisions are expected by December 2007 and will be announced at the Health Policy Institute of Ohio Awards for Health Policy Research Luncheon in that month. For submissions with multiple authors, awards will be made only to the first author. University revenue sharing policies and other associated costs for awards are the sole responsibility of the principal author. Awardees will be notified in person and an announcement will be posted within the Health Policy Institute of Ohio’s Newsletter and on the Health Policy Institute of Ohio’s website. Awarded studies will be posted on the Health Policy Institute of Ohio’s website. In addition, the Health Policy Institute of Ohio will issue press releases about the awards.

Monetary Amounts for Awards:

  • The monetary amount for the Ohio Health Policy Researcher of the Year – 2007 is $5,000 to the researcher and $2,500 to the researcher’s department.
  • The monetary amount for the Ohio Health Policy Research Award – 2007 is $2,000 to the researcher and $500 to the researcher’s department.
  • The monetary amount to the Best Health Policy Research Award for an Independent Scholar or Practitioner – 2007 is $2,000.
  • The monetary amount for the Best Ohio Health Policy Student Research Award – 2007 is $1,000.

Taxable Income Obligation:

Internal Revenue Service rules obligate the Health Policy Institute of Ohio to issue an IRS 1099 Form at year end for all winning authors and, when applicable, their institutions. All tax obligations associated with the Health Policy Institute of Ohio Awards for Health Policy Research are the responsibility of the author or the author’s institution.

Award Sponsors:

The 2006 and 2007 awards are funded by The Health Foundation of Greater Cincinnati. The Health Foundation of Greater Cincinnati is an independent 501(c)(4) social welfare organization dedicated to improving community health. The foundation awards grants to non-profit and governmental organizations for programs and activities that improve health in Cincinnati and 20 surrounding counties in Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio.

The Health Policy Institute of Ohio is an independent 501(c)(3), nonpartisan organization that analyzes key health issues, examines health trends, and communicates current research to Ohio policymakers, legislators, and other decision makers. The Institute also convenes discussions on important health issues in Ohio by bringing together representatives from various sectors with keen interests in health matters, including policymakers, health care providers, employers, advocates, health plans, consumers, state agencies, and researchers.
