Description of e-health project:

Initial project planning and assessments have been completed for selection of an Electronic Health Record (EHR) system.   RFP’s have been requested and received from vendors.  We are now in the process of scheduling selected vendors to come on-site for daylong demonstrations.  Our next steps will be to receive formal approval for funding from our hospital board and to schedule site visits.

Description of barriers facing the project:

Vendors cannot design Electronic Health Record systems exclusively for pediatric institutions.    CMC currently has 33 specialty clinics in addition to the usual offering of patient care services of a traditional hospital,  (excluding OB-GYN).    Identifying an Electronic Health Record system that meets the needs of such a broad array of pediatric specialists in both ambulatory care and inpatient care settings is by far the most significant barrier we are facing at this time.

As we move forward we know that we will have to confront additional barriers.  We anticipate that our biggest barrier in the future will be resistance from clinical users.

Description of needs to effectively complete the project:

The need to integrate our people, processes and technology.  This will be a significant culture change for CMC.  We are paper-based institution at this time. Training our staff on process redesign concepts and change management concepts will be critical for our success.  This needs to be a total team effort with commitment from staff in multiple departments.
