Governor Bob Taft announced on May 26, 2006, that the Health Policy Institute of Ohio has received a $350,000 contract from the federal government to study how Ohio’s privacy and security laws and business practices would affect the exchange of electronic health information.

The contract, from RTI International on behalf of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices, funds the establishment of the Health Information Security and Privacy Collaboration (HISPC). Governor Taft and the Ohio Department of Health named the Health Policy Institute of Ohio as state designee for the contract. more

Health Information Community of Ohio meeting

The Health Policy Institute of Ohio (HPIO) held the first meeting of the Health Information Community of Ohio (HICO) on February 24 at the Business Technology Center in Columbus. There were 70 people in attendance, with speakers from Tennessee, New York and Minnesota, as well as from all areas of Ohio, and a wide variety of stakeholder groups were represented.

The formation of HICO is part of HPIO's Health Information Technology (HIT) Initiative and is central to the Research Triangle Inc.'s (RTI) Request for Proposals regarding Privacy and Security. RTI is the contractor for a series of work subcontracts funded by AHRQ (Agency for Health Research and Quality) and the ONC (Office of the National Coordinator of Health Information Technology).  The HICO Response can be downloaded here. The Institute has been designated by the Governor as the Offeror for the State of Ohio in the bid for one of 40 contracts ranging from $150,000 to $350,000 for the next several months. The contracts call for working groups of diverse stakeholders in a state to meet. The groups will work to identify barriers and create solutions to the task of secure and private Health Information Exchange (HIE) among various medical providers in a patient-centric environment.

The contract awards will be announced in April 2006.
